COVER STORY
SHADOWS FALL: Weaving barbed wire thrash riffs into a rich tapestry of modern hardcore and melodic death metal, Massachusetts natives Shadows Fall has firmly established themselves as leaders in the current American metal scene with their masterful new album, Threads of Life. Fresh from the studio, the excitement in frontman Brian Fair’s voice is infectious, as he gives the lowdown on what is sure to be one of this year’s biggest and most talked about metal albums.

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS
POISON THE WELL: “I am relieved,” says vocalist Jeffrey Moreira from his Florida home. The singer, known for his sharply slicing onstage and recorded vocal performances, is low key and laid-back, despite the tumultuous past few years that his band has endured. It’s as though he’s relieved that Poison the Well is finally revving its engines again and creeping back into the hardcore scene’s consciousness with their new album Versions.

OTEP: Led by singer and namesake Otep Shamaya, the Los Angeles based band’s latest artistic and aggressive endeavor, their third full-length The Ascension, is a far cry from the group’s 2002 debut, drawing on more experimental styles and techniques. Shamaya discusses writing the new record and what it’s like to be one of the few prominent women in the heavy music scene.

ANBERLIN: Band interviews don't normally take place at 11 AM for an obvious reason: Most musicians are not awake that early in the morning. But not Stephen Christian. The Anberlin frontman is wide-eyed and full of more enthusiasm than most entire bands can muster as he discusses writing and recording the band’s dynamic new record, Cities.

BAYSIDE has had a roller coaster past year and a half. Armed with a new album, The Walking Wounded, and a new sense of optimism, frontman Anthony Raneri, who was married two days before this interview, seems ready to take on the world.

DARK TRANQUILLITY: After more than 15 years together, Sweden’s Dark Tranquillity pours just as much passion and power into their latest work as they did into classics like The Gallery and Haven. The precision strike of 2005’s Character has been embellished and diversified for their brand new album, Fiction, and vocalist Mikael Stanne explains the approach behind this future classic.

THE END: “It's a wicked stage name,” says Andrew Hercules, the 27-year-old guitarist, creative force, and lyricist for The End. “And sometimes it’s insulting that people question if that’s my real name." On Elementary, the band’s latest full-length album, The End scales back the highly conceptual elements found on 2004’s Within Dividia for a more straightforward approach to their heavy and intense music.

MNEMIC: Greek mythology, the theory of existentIalism, and a heavy dose of death metal…these variables are part of an even greater musical equation known as Mnemic.Although guitarist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie observes few differences between the American and European metal scenes, he addresses this defiant need to distinguish their band from a barrage of copycats.

IN THIS MOMENT: When the lead singer of a band is as beautiful, talented, and charismatic as Maria Brink, it’s easy to understand why In This Moment has quickly become one of hard rock’s most talked about metal acts. On their debut album, Beautiful Tragedy, the Southern California quintet blends delicate melodies with brutal riffs and breakdowns.

ALESANA is a band that knows the value of hard work. After releasing their full-length debut On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax on a small label last year, Alesana has signed with Fearless Records, which has given the album wider distribution and exposure. Vocalist Shawn Milke fills us in on the band’s journey so far.
