COVER STORY
AS I LAY DYING: On their fourth studio album, An Ocean Between Us, metalcore warriors As I Lay Dying unleash the most diverse, belligerent, and intense record of their career. Exuding a humbling confidence and an unshakable faith, As I Lay Dying has been earning critical plaudits and a fervent reaction within the metal community. We caught up with founding members vocalist Tim Lambesis and drummer Jordan Mancino to get the lowdown on the forces that have driven them towards creating their defining musical statement.

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS
ATREYU continues to connect with music fans the world over. Lead Sails Paper Anchor, the band's excellent new album is not what one would expect. The album offers a more mature and adventuresome Atreyu, but the tenets of the band's sounddetuned guitars, layered vocal harmonies, and bulging breakdownsare still plentiful. Brandon Saller and Alex Varkatzas reflect on the band's recent move to a new record label and the risks Atreyu took on Lead Sails Paper Anchor.

DROP DEAD, GORGEOUS is wise beyond its years, thanks to an early education of life on the road and a fast climb up the record label ranks. The band's sophomore full-length effort, Worse Than a Fairy Tale, is built around the story of a small town being stalked by a serial killer. Keyboardist Aaron Rothe shares a few hints about the mysteries of the murderous fairy tale, the challenges his young band faces, and how the internet really is your friend.

AIDEN vocalist Wil Francis had an epiphany when writing the music and lyrics for Conviction, the band's new album for Victory Records filled with anthems for the black-clad, disaffected youth. "I just came to this realization," the inky haired singer says. "Punk rock is an attitude, not a sound."

3 INCHES OF BLOOD: Ozzfest 2007 tour diary by guitarist Justin Hagberg. "This tour completely rules! Metal, booze, barbeques, and berserkers pretty much sums up this tour, and that's killer! I couldn't think of anywhere I'd rather be."

EMERY: "We wanted to come up with a new way to express emotion and heaviness," says Emery lead vocalist/guitarist Toby Morrell in a pronounced Southern drawl. On Emery's third album, I'm Only a Man, the band has succeeded in doing exactly that, while still sounding like the urgent, melodic, post-hardcore band that the fivesome has always been.

HIMSA has steadily ascended into the ranks of the extreme metal elite, refining its brand of vicious modern thrash with each release and culminating in what is arguably its masterpiece, Summon in Thunder. Nice guy and bass beast Derek Harn discusses the finer details of the new album.

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER: Nocturnal is The Black Dahlia Murder's most savage statement to date. The result of a turbulent time for the Detroit melodic death metal five piece, they have weathered the storm and come out fighting. Frontman Trevor Strnad voices his thoughts on the band's achievements, the grossness of hospitals, and all things metal.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA: Dynamic, melodic, and powerful, the band's second effort for Rise Records, Plagues, takes metalcore down many twists and turns. Mike Hranica opens up about his faith, the band's latest disc, and what it's like to go from high school graduation to the Sounds of the Underground tour.

DIVINE HERESY: Trouncing metal devotees yet again with his inimitable, no-holds-barred guitar attack, Dino Cazares is back with Divine Heresy and the band's debut release, Bleed the Fifth, on Century Media Records. An enthusiastic Cazares discusses his latest endeavor and shares his humble beginnings as a musician.
