COVER STORY UNDEROATH: A lot has happened since Underoath entered the studio to record 2006’s Define the Great Line. Having taken some time off to heal their rifts and subsequently returning to the road, Underoath proved that they were in it for the long haul, and any lingering doubts will be silenced by the band’s new album, Lost in the Sound of Separation, which sees them delivering both their heaviest and most daring musical statement to date. We caught up with vocalist Spencer Chamberlain and drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie to probe the goings on behind the scenes, gain an insight into the inspiration behind Lost in the Sound of Separation, and to find out why the band is now stronger than ever.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS ALL THAT REMAINS is one of the hardest working bands in metal. After a two year trek that saw them conquer both Ozzfest and Sounds of the Underground, as well as countless stages across the globe, the band headed straight into Audiohammer Studios to record Overcome, the follow-up to their breakout album, The Fall of Ideals. The band’s work ethic is such that singer Phil Labonte was locked away with producer Jason Suecof, perfecting his vocals at the time of our interview. “How cliché is that, dude?” the frontman asks with a chuckle once we get the ball rolling.
COLDWORKER: The new Coldworker disc, Rotting Paradise, is unquestionably one of the most intriguing, well honed progressive death metal records to rise up out of a long bloodless, desiccated scene in some time. Yet, often as not, it seems all anyone wants to talk to drummer Anders Jakobson about is his last band, Nasum. “You can’t erase your past, and I especially don’t want to erase mine, because I’m really proud of all the things I did with Nasum,” Jakobson sighs when asked to slog through the inevitable query one more time.
OPIATE FOR THE MASSES guitarist Jim Kaufman is a happy man. After a nine year roller coaster that has taken he and co-founder/vocalist Ron Underwood through the highs and the lows of the music business, the songwriting duo is finally seeing their musical vision come to fruition. Backed by the recently solidified rhythm section of drummer Seven Antonopolous and bassist Anna Kjellberg, Opiate for the Masses is ready to take on the world with their new album, Manifesto, a well crafted and polished fusion of organic and synthetic tones. No wonder Kaufman is so eager to talk about it.
LESS THAN JAKE: Vinnie Fiorello knows how to multitask. In addition to being the drummer and lyricist for ska punk veterans Less Than Jake, he also runs his own newly formed record label, Paper + Plastick, and a toy company called Wünderland War. After 16 years and seven full-length studio albums, Less Than Jake decided to leave the major label route and embark on their own independent path by starting Sleep It Off Records. The band’s new release is GNV FLA, named after the airport code for the group’s hometown of Gainesville, Florida.
KEEP OF KALESSIN: The mighty roar of Norwegian black metal is far from dead, and Keep of Kalessin is right at the forefront, taking the genre to epic new levels. It is hard to believe that the band once existed in the shadow of Emperor and Dimmu Borgir, but any doubters left after Armada hit the scene will be wiped away by the band’s latest monolithic war cry that is Kolossus. Guitarist Obsidian C. has been there from day one and was more than happy to help chart Keep of Kalessin’s rise to domination.
DARKEST HOUR is headlining this summer’s mighty Thrash and Burn tour across the US, and the Washington DC band is already hard at work on the follow-up to 2007’s crushing Deliver Us. After 15 years into their career, Darkest Hour is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon, having also recently shared the same hallowed stages with the reunited At the Gates. Guitarist Mike Schleibaum takes some time to catch us up on why it’s a good time to be in Darkest Hour right now.
ALESANA maintains a positive outlook on life, penning innovative material that differs from the modern day musical landscape. That combination is apparent on their sophomore set Where Myth Fades to Legend. Throughout the explosive collection, the band demonstrates a sweetcore swagger as they flaunt their polished screamo fusion. Guitarist/vocalist Shawn Milke and his cohorts are in the midst of headlining this year’s Warped Tour. At this rate, Alesana could cement their legacy sooner than expected.
SKY EATS AIRPLANE stirs up the metal airwaves with synths, samples, and riff scorching hard-tronica on the band’s new self-titled release. Following up 2006’s Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day, the Fort Worth, Texas based act expanded from a duo to a full-blown five piece band. And with recent tours with Alesana and A Skylit Drive plus three weeks on this year’s Warped Tour, founding member Lee Duck is excited to go over the group’s latest album, despite being “sick as a dog and hacking up a lung.”
