COVER STORY
THE USED: When it comes to blending melody, raw emotion, and the kind of excitement that can only be gleaned from something that beats with a heart of true rock ‘n’ roll, The Used stands second to none. Over the course of the last eight years, the Utah based crew has released three powerful full-lengths and a wealth of EPs. Now, The Used is returning with Artwork, a collection of 11 stunning tracks that is the band’s defining achievement, throwing down a gauntlet to every act putting out a record in 2009 and daring them to do better. Ahead of Artwork’s release, vocalist Bert McCracken and guitarist Quinn Allman talk about what went into the making of the record, the obstacles they have had to overcome along the way, the inspirational nature of death, and where they see themselves going in the future.

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS
BURY YOUR DEAD: On their fifth full-length, It’s Nothing Personal, metalcore bruisers Bury Your Dead has made their definitive album. Bursting with their trademark pneumatic chuggery and seething with hostility, it also sees them venturing out into melodic territory that redefines what the band is capable of, and it could be the album that propels them into the commercial mainstream. Speaking to guitarist and founder member Brendan “Slim” MacDonald and vocalist Myke Terry, the honesty and confidence that flows through everything they say reflects their unshakeable belief in the band’s vitality and the passion they put into their music.

EVERY TIME I DIE: Having recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary, Buffalo, New York’s snarling and swaggering hardcore beast Every Time I Die is primed to drop their fifth record, New Junk Aesthetic. Famed for their visceral live show, anarchic sense of humor, and for having a seemingly never ending host of bass players within their ranks, there has never been a better time for a band that casts a cynical eye on the world while beating you senseless with insidiously affecting sounds. Vocalist Keith Buckley takes the time to give us the dirt.

GOATWHORE is destined to become one of the definitive metal bands on the planet with the convincing new album, Carving Out the Eyes of God—one of the best extreme metal releases you’ll hear this year. Forming the nucleus of Goatwhore alongside guitarist Sammy Duet since the beginning, the always affable and astute frontman Ben Falgoust (who is also the vocalist for Soilent Green) enlightens us on the finer points of Carving Out the Eyes of God.

SUICIDE SILENCE:
The band’s refusal to sit at home has honed them into a lean, mean, shredding machine. So much so, that when Suicide Silence entered The Machine Shop studios, they came out with an album that thrashes, smashes, and bulldozes every trend and genre constraint out there. More than just a cool reference to the film Predator, No Time to Bleed is the foot that Suicide Silence will use to kick the asses of metal fans everywhere, according to frontman Mitch Lucker.

EMERY can do no wrong. Just ask the band’s legions of faithful followers that have unerringly supported the quintet. The band’s latest effort, …In Shallow Seas We Sail, encapsulates all of their trademarked energy into a strong and smart collection of songs. Fresh off playing a packed release show in Nashville, Tennessee, guitarist/bassist/vocalist Devin Shelton graciously takes the time to tell us all about it.

EYES SET TO KILL has set their sights firmly upon the future and has hit the ground running with The World Outside. Anchored by the Rodriguez sisters, Alexia and Anissa, Eyes Set to Kill has crafted a collection of songs that presents the metallic ‘n’ melodic punch of Reach with a mature delivery and sense of passion that belies the band’s young age. We caught up with Alexia and Anissa to discover The World Outside.

A SKYLIT DRIVE is storming the music scene at a furious pace. Throughout Adelphia, the six piece beautifully weaves punk melodies with tight metal riffs and hard bass to create a dramatic setting. Between promoting Adelphia and more touring, it looks like A Skylit Drive will have another furious 18 months ahead of them.

DARKEST HOUR: On Darkest Hour’s sixth album, The Eternal Return, the band goes back to their roots. The result is a focused, smartly written album that is more organic in sound. It’s also the band’s last album on their current Victory Records contract, and it is clear that they feel a sense of renewal and excitement for the next chapter of Darkest Hour. Mike Schleibaum checks in from the Summer Slaughter tour.

ANTI-FLAG has had critics, detractors, and personal tragedies, but the band has never swayed from what they know and believe to be true. The People or the Gun is the band’s ninth album, yet it still sounds like their first, blasting enthusiasm and vitality from start to finish. As the band stands on a proud history and looks towards a bright future, guitarist and vocalist Justin Sane discusses life, love, and The People or the Gun.
