SPECIAL DOUBLE COVER ISSUE!
COVER STORY DETHKLOK: Forget about amps that go to 11 and alien monsters from Antarctica, Dethklok is the real deal…in hyperbolic 2D! Their brutal brand of death metal and animated comedy noir antics have captivated millions across the globe, thanks to the television show Metalocalypse on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Dubbed the world’s greatest cultural force and the seventh largest economy, Dethklok recently graced us mere mortals with a second epic album, the ingeniously titled Dethalbum II, as well as a coast-to-coast tour in support. Of course, the flesh and bone behind Dethklok’s ink and metal, as well as the co-creator/writer and star of Metalocalypse, is Brendon Small, the Berklee graduate who writes, plays, and sings all of the band’s music. Small has enlisted the aid of legendary drummer Gene Hoglan to bring the albums to life, along with touring members Mike Keneally (guitars) and Bryan Beller (bass). Taking a break from their hectic schedule, Small and Hoglan delve into the depths of Dethklok lore to enlighten us all.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS AUGUST BURNS RED: Hitting harder and more impressively than ever before, August Burns Red deals in an exhilarating line of abrasive metalcore. Having already put out the powerful full-lengths —2005’s Thrill Seeker and 2007’s Messengers—August Burns Red is back with Constellations, their most streamlined and dynamic release to date. Debuting at number 24 on the Billboard 200, the band has kicked a serious hole in the mainstream. We caught up with guitarist JB Brubaker and drummer Matt Greiner for an insight into their world.
THE BLED has not had an easy time of it over the last couple of years. Crippled by an accumulated debt, the members were forced into taking time off from the band, leading to three of the five members deciding not to come back. However, guitarist Jeremy Ray Talley and vocalist James Muñoz, the beating heart of The Bled, picked themselves up, dusted themselves down, and set out to make the best and most hostile record the band has yet to put its name to.
OF MICE & MEN: You may not know the name Austin Carlile, but you might recognize him as the original vocalist of post-hardcore crew Attack Attack!. Having parted ways with that band, he is returning with a new project, Of Mice & Men, which has him delivering the most personal and passionate music of his career. Now with a solidified lineup, the five piece has been touring hard while constructing their self-titled debut record.
EPICA: Amidst the chaos, apathy, and despair of the 21st century, Epica still manages to find beauty and honest, human emotion. Weaving together classical instrumentation, metal riffs, operatic vocals, and the grandeur reserved for movie soundtracks, the Dutch metallers have crafted Design Your Universe. The eminently talented mezzo-soprano Simone Simons was happy to discuss it along with other details of this fine outfit.
THROWDOWN vocalist Dave Peters is a nice guy. He’s calm, friendly, and not nearly the fearsome, hyper aggressive maniac you see on stage, tearing down venues night after night. While albums like Haymaker, Vendetta, and Venom & Tears brought Throwdown to where they are today, it is the band’s latest effort, Deathless, which is poised to take the quartet to an even higher level. We contacted the frontman to learn more.
THE RED CHORD: Blending death metal and hardcore in a way that is both more unique and sonically devastating than any competitor, The Red Chord is in a class all its own. Fed Through the Teeth Machine sees the act downsizing to a quartet. Lead barker, lyrical mad scientist, and Black Market Activities head honcho Guy Kozowyk is a behemoth frontman on stage and a thoughtful and forward thinking kind of guy in person.
ATREYU: Alex Varkatzas is heading home from an intense workout in his native Southern California. The outspoken Varkatzas has provided the fuel for the Atreyu fire since the metalcore scene began to thrive in the earlier part of the new millennium’s first decade. These days, he’s engaged to be married and has mellowed out a bit, but the sound of the band is as sharp as ever on Congregation of the Damned.
ALESANA has never been a band lacking in vision. Now back with their third full-length, The Emptiness, the Raleigh, North Carolina band is being more ambitious than ever. With an involved storyline, lavish string arrangements, and choruses that burn their way into the brains of all exposed to them, it’s sure to be a future classic, as vocalist Shawn Milke gives us an insight into the making of The Emptiness.
