COVER STORY FOUR YEAR STRONG is standing tall as the self-proclaimed Enemy of the World. The newest album from this Massachusetts five piece takes the aggro injected popcore of their debut, Rise or Die Trying, to the next level with a more focused approach to songwriting and performance—something that guitarist/vocalist Alan Day couldn’t be more excited about. The amicable Day sheds some light on how Enemy of the World came together and why this is one album that will be rattling around the brains of Four Year Strong fans for a long time to come. Beyond the band’s newest piece of work, the guitarist opens up as he shares his thoughts on life, music, and just about everything else under the sun, stars, and cyberspace.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS HIM has been mining the vein of brooding, darkly romantic sounds to create some of the finest hard rocking music to ever be lumped under the goth banner. With Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, the five piece from Finland is striding into the most melodic and immediate music of their career. We caught up with charismatic frontman Ville Valo to find out about writing big hooks, his experiences with getting sober, and continuing to explore the strange and dark matters of the heart.
FROM FIRST TO LAST entitled their new album Throne to the Wolves, but the band has felt like they have been thrown to the wolves one too many times. From First to Last exited Suretone for Rise Records and guitarist Travis Richter left the group. Now, the band has more creativity flowing than ever, and that’s clear on their fourth album. They’re a different type of beast, but From First to Last still has that fierce, familiar bite, according to Matt Manning.
ALKALINE TRIO: Unlike many musicians that ride the major label rails from garage to glamour, Alkaline Trio singer/guitarist Mike Skiba never forgot where he came from and why he got started in the first place. Recalling the essence of the band’s early days, This Addiction marks a new beginning in Alkaline Trio’s career. Matt Skiba is putting the Y back in DIY, the rock back into punk rock, and he’s here to talk about the good times Alkaline Trio is having along the way.
DEMON HUNTER is not just a band; it is a Christian metal institution. New album The World Is a Thorn is the pinnacle of that balance of pure metallic aggression and infectious melody and one that vocalist/songwriter Ryan Clark achieved while having to replace two guitarists. The result is another stunner of an album, as Clark discusses with complete confidence to go along with his most affable manner.
CARNIFEX has come a long way in a short time. Igniting the powder keg that is their third album, Hell Chose Me, the unabashed deathcore quintet has been chipping away at the conventions surrounding their scene with vicious extreme metal, a steely work ethic, merch designs that straddle the divide between old-school upside down crosses and Day-Glo colors, and, as vocalist Scott Lewis explains, writing lyrics that set “a bad example.”
DARK TRANQUILLITY has been slamming out awesome Gothenburg death metal for two decades now. That’s a long time for Mikael Stanne to be ripping apart his vocal cords. And yet, between putting together the rarities compilation Yesterworlds, the live CD/DVD Where Death Is Most Alive, and their ninth studio album, We Are the Void, the past year has been one of the band’s busiest ever.
WAR OF AGES is on a mission—to be the best band possible. New album Eternal proves yet again that War of Ages has stayed true to that mission. It is as riffed up and fiery as any prior outing, but it is even more melodically based, resulting in an album that will end up as the one to beat when the band begins work on its next long player. Vocalist Leroy Hamp checks in.
OVERKILL: There’s not many bands that can claim to still be wrecking necks after more than 25 years, but New Jersey’s Overkill knows no other way of life. Ironbound, their 16th full-length, sees them once again embracing the classic Overkill sound while keeping things fresh and urgent. Vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth is a man with charisma and personality to spare.
