COVER STORY

A SKYLIT DRIVE has been opening hearts and minds with their music ever since the full-length record Wires and the Concept of Breathing dropped in May of 2008. They turned that momentum into a fury of creation, responding just a little over a year later with 2009’s Adelphia—their Fearless Records debut that went on to tally more than 100,000 in sales—and now the band’s brand new opus Identity on Fire.
Frontman Michael Jagmin is excited to talk about Identity on Fire and did so from the band’s recent tour with Thursday and Underoath. He sounds satisfied with the band’s output, thrilled about the huge amount of touring in front of them, and assured that Identity on Fire will etch A Skylit Drive’s name into the genre’s pantheon.

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS
ASKING ALEXANDRIA
guitarist Ben Bruce is not a man who takes things for granted. When the band released their Sumerian Records debut, Stand Up and Scream, they were tossed headfirst into the tumult of the touring lifestyle and the band nearly fell to the perils of rock ‘n’ roll excess.
Refusing to become another victim of the biz, Bruce and his bandmates pulled themselves together and used their experiences as inspiration for Reckless and Relentless, the new album that promises to leave its predecessor in the dust. The amicable and charismatic guitarist reaches out for an honest and revealing conversation.

DESTROY REBIULD UNTIL GOD SHOWS: Singer Craig Owens is flexing a whole new set of throat muscles in his new project, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (often referred to as D.R.U.G.S.). The frontman’s exit from Chiodos was acrimonious at the time, but he’s much more Zen about it nowadays. Owens has, in fact, moved on. He is accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative, and that attitude seeps out of his voice during our conversation.

DEVILDRIVER knows what it takes to stand out in the crowded metal scene—tour more than the next band, push yourself harder, and be more pissed off. With their newest album, Beast, they’ve made a good argument for all three cases. The most aptly named record of the band’s career, Beast attacks like the most vehemently bloodthirsty bastard your twisted little mind can conjure up. It’s also been the most cathartic for growler Dez Fafara.

DEADLOCK
has the music and a message. Combining environmentally conscious lyrics with epic, symphonic, and melodic death metal, Deadlock has become a band synonymous with the seamless melding of metal music and hardcore ethos. This year gives us Bizarro World, a comparatively traditional sounding Deadlock effort that brings the band full circle. Founding vocalist Johannes Prem brings us up to speed on Deadlock.
