COVER STORY SUICIDE SILENCE is one of the most vital, exhilarating, and important bands in contemporary heavy music. Crashing onto the scene with their debut album, The Cleansing set a new standard in sheer focused aggression. Somehow upping the stakes with their second full-length, No Time to Bleed, the quintet—Mitch Lucker (vocals), Mark Heylmun (lead guitar), Christopher Garza (guitar), Alex Lopez (drums), and Daniel Kenny (bass)—earned a reputation for their visceral live show and relentless commitment to touring. We spoke to Lucker and Heylmun, who gave us an insight into what lurks behind their stunning new release, The Black Crown, and the reason why Suicide Silence is determined to outlast both pigeonholing and the many bands vying for a place at the top of the metal heap.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS SKELETONWITCH: If success is a product of choice and discipline, then Skeletonwitch is the proof in metal’s proverbial pudding. The Ohio quintet hasn’t stopped writing, recording, touring, and just plain working their asses off in order to ensure that anyone with ears has heard their unique take on an appealing blend of blackened thrash, death, and traditional heavy metal. Dedicated to his craft and still loving every minute of it, guitarist Scott Hedrick discusses the choice to stop at nothing and the discipline of making it happen.
IWRESTLEDABEARONCE guitarist Steven Bradley is one of the millions of Americans that seems to suffer from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. What differentiates Bradley from the music masses is that he, along with bandmates Krysta Cameron (vocals), John Ganey (guitars), Mike Martin (bass), and Mike Montgomery (drums), creates some of the most wildly artistic metal out there today. The band’s newest album, Ruining It for Everybody, takes Iwrestledabearonce’s infamously off-kilter sound to the next level. While the band’s music has become more focused and song oriented than previous material, Bradley remains one of music’s most interesting characters.
