COVER STORY I SEE STARS frontman Devin Oliver has already lived the life most young musicians only fantasize about. With record deals, worldwide tours, spots on Warped Tour and Sonisphere, and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Oliver is living the dream. He doesn’t intend to stop now either, as I See Stars recently recorded their third full-length album, taking the band’s mixture of hardcore, pop, and electronica to dizzying new heights. After an in-depth conversation with Oliver, who puts forth an air of maturity and focus beyond his years, it’s easy to understand why I See Stars is at the top of the ladder in today’s scene.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS LAMB OF GOD is going strong 16 years into their career, and with their new album, Resolution, the Richmond, Virginia band has demonstrated that they are still hungry for creating visceral metal that hits home hard. The result is a more daring and progressively minded record while not compromising on sheer sonic brutality. Drummer Chris Adler tells us what went into the making of Resolution and the very real danger Randy Blythe’s former addictions posed to Lamb of God’s continuation.
ALESANA: When developing the band’s new release, Alesana turned to none other than revered Italian poet Dante Alighieri for a thematic touchstone. A Place Where the Sun Is Silent is a sweeping hour long suite broken into two acts that features plenty of Alesana’s signature aggressive and melodic riffing, along with extra doses of piano and strings. Milke explains the band’s varied influences and multifaceted artistic vision.
LACUNA COIL: Cristina Scabbia’s soaring voice, both alternating and joining with co-vocalist Andrea Ferro’s heavier style, the heft of the guitar riffs and punch of the rhythm section, the cold, shadowy atmospheres, and hook after hook is what Lacuna Coil brings on the band’s sixth full-length album, Dark Adrenaline. There is gothic metal, and then there is Lacuna Coil. Or as Ferro affirms in humbler terms, Lacuna Coil was gothic metal before gothic metal was cool. MASTODON has always done things their own way, and in doing so, they have carved themselves a reputation as one of the most ambitious, imaginative, and hard working bands in modern metal. The Hunter is as riveting as anything that came before, maintaining the unique personality the Atlanta band has developed over a 12 year career. Bassist/ vocalist Troy Sanders gives us an insight into Mastodon’s bearded world.
CARNIFEX: The San Diego band was determined to up the ante with their fourth full-length, and Until I Feel Nothing does so with a vengeance. More streamlined, ruthless, and downright hostile, it is also far and away their catchiest release to date. Scott Lewis' nihilistic lyrics have never sounded more honest, and he gives us some insight into the record and why Carnifex remains an important outlet for negativity. ABORTED means business, and the Belgian band’s latest death metal killer, Global Flatline, is proof positive of the quintet’s lethal ability to deliver complex and intense extremity with dynamic songwriting chops. The art of the song is of prime importance to Aborted frontman Sven de Caluwé, as is the career blueprint of Carcass when it comes to mapping out his band’s brutal turns and melodic twists.
ANIMALS AS LEADERS: One listen to Weightless should spell out why this trio has soldered connections with a wide swath of fans, everyone from the most technique obsessed musician to the Cynic and Meshuggah loving nerd. We spoke with Tosin Abasi while he was in Los Angeles to discuss unearthly experiences, why the night time is the best time, and, of course, musicianship.
