COVER STORY A DAY TO REMEMBER: Celebrating the end of a whirlwind tour, A Day to Remember is having a night they will never forget. “There’s this inferno going on right in front of me. I almost burned my face off,” laughs vocalist Jeremy McKinnon from a seemingly chaotic after show dinner party in the heart of Tokyo. Unfazed by the flames that nearly saw an abrupt end to our conversation, the singer’s enthusiasm is easy to detect as he opens up about the past, present, future, and philosophy of A Day to Remember. The band is eager to embark on the next step of their journey, which now begins as they enter the studio. As the flames settle, McKinnon’s focus and ability to put things into perspective becomes evident, as he delivers a candid and honest assessment of the road behind and what lies ahead.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS THE WORD ALIVE: It hasn’t taken The Word Alive long to rise up the ranks. With extensive tours on the horizon (including their first headliner in Europe), as well as a brand new record, Life Cycles, the band will be proving just how much strength they truly have. Is Life Cycles The Word Alive’s best material yet, or will they fall into a sophomore slump? We talk to vocalist Tyler “Telle” Smith to find out.
WHITECHAPEL: Dispensing mountain rattling shockwaves of pure, unfiltered death metal, hardcore, and groove, Whitechapel has been leading the charge of extreme metal acts onto the nation’s bestsellers list. With a new self-titled album and a series of festivals and tours locked and loaded, this year will be the band’s biggest yet. The thoughtful, easygoing, and sincere Phil Bozeman shares his excitement for Whitechapel’s latest release and the joys of tiny dogs.
VAMPIRES EVERYWHERE!: When a band hits the scene and finds immediate success, one would think that changing things up would be the furthest thing from their minds. Change, however, was the first thing Vampires Everywhere! did. The end result of their efforts is Hellbound and Heartless, a harsh, heavy, and aggressive contrast to the band’s previous recordings. As singer Michael Vampire explains, the Vampires Everywhere! fans get on the new album is the monster that was always lurking inside.
SHADOWS FALL is the elder statesman of the Massachusetts metalcore scene, and they are showing no signs of slowing down. The band has now returned with Fire from the Sky, a record that proves their best years are not behind them. The album is an energized blast of state of the art metal that sees the band once again build upon their signature sound in exciting ways. Vocalist Brian Fair gives us the lowdown on what went into the making of the record and the passion that still drives them.
GOD FORBID has put out some of the most powerful music to be tagged as metalcore, and now they are back with a new album, a modified lineup, and a renewed hunger. Guitarist Matt Wicklund gives us the lowdown on what he brings to God Forbid, the making of Equilibrium, and the passion that drives the band.
JOB FOR A COWBOY: Featuring past and present members of Despised Icon, The Red Chord, 1349, and Cephalic Carnage and a shred head lead guitarist, the band has come together to create their third full-length album, Demonocracy. We caught up with bassist Nick Schendzielos to talk about time management, real death metal, and shitty sheriffs.
HOT WATER MUSIC: Although Hot Water Music has returned after an eight year hiatus with what might be their finest album to date, Exister doesn’t exactly celebrate a reunion of sorts …at least not how guitarist and co-vocalist Chris Wollard sees it, anyway. To this six stringer, it’s just par for the course for Hot Water Music. Wollard spoke to us on a bright, sunny Florida day to offer up the details.
THE CULT: Ian Astbury is far more than the noise, blood, and fire excess often associated with the famed frontman’s iconic rock band. Equal parts medicine man, philosopher, and hard rock wildman, Astbury commands both stage and studio, a fact proven once again on The Cult’s excellent new effort, Choice of Weapon. We were lucky enough to have a conversation with the enigmatic Astbury, discussing The Cult with this one-of-a-kind musician.
