COVER STORY
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN:
IT’S NOT EASY FOR BANDS TO REMAIN BANDS, AND IT’S EVEN MORE DIFFICULT FOR ICONS TO REMAIN ICONS. The Dillinger Escape Plan has endured lineup changes, a reliably tasteless mainstream, an increasingly vapid underground, and the pressure to expand upon an acclaimed album that may have immediately painted them into a corner. As Ben Weinman explains, Dillinger plays what Dillinger wants to hear. Heading into Miss Machine, the unusual time signatures and extreme heaviness that marked their early work no longer seemed so odd or extreme.

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE is the new measure of American heavy metal. The band’s third full-length, The End of Heartache, is one of the top albums of the year, and with hardcore breakdowns, Swedish metal riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dynamic vocals, the music of Killswitch Engage is as versatile as it is monstrous.

TIGER ARMY is a band not of this era. Nor is Tiger Army a band of another era. It is a band that belongs everywhere and yet nowhere at the same time. In fact, Tiger Army is the sort of band that can impress your Patsy Cline loving grandmother, rock ’n’ roll parents, Morrissey obsessed cousin, goth sister, and punk kid brother.

SHADOWS FALL: With their new album The War Within, Shadows Fall has raised the bar once again, crafting 10 world-class tunes without betraying their unique style or intensity. Vocalist Brian Fair calls in from the road (where Shadows Fall spends practically every moment outside of the studio) to talk about this momentous release.

THE PRODIGY: Remember “Baby’s Got A Temper,” the single The Prodigy released in 2002 as a teaser for their upcoming album, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned? Liam Howlett wishes you didn’t. A lot has changed for The Prodigy since then, but one thing that hasn’t changed is Liam Howlett’s love for the beats.

MINISTRY: When Ministry’s Al Jourgensen is in charge of the spice rack, things get a bit dangerous. Rather than medicate an empty stomach, his version of molé is more likely to offer up a nasty collage of things you aren’t likely to find anywhere near a dinner plate. Unless you’ve eaten parts of the Bush administration.

CRADLE OF FILTH: Nymphetamine may derive its title from the band’s addiction to a certain fairer sex, but the music is the perfect balance of everything this wicked quintet excels at. Dani Filth is in a typical rock ‘n’ roll state—he swears that his best interviews are done lying down with a hangover.

THE FAINT:
Wet From Birth is bold, it’s daring, and it will make The Faint even cooler than they already are. Meeting up with all five members one muggy lunchtime in the East Village, Clark Baechle, Todd Baechle, Dapose, Joel Petersen, and Jacob Thiele all look like they’ve just come from a day at art school or a late night on the town.

NORA: Willy Wonka is wicked hardcore. And wicked desperate. Because he somehow managed to worm his way into Nora’s album Dreamers and Deadmen.

VHS OR BETA has been the indie rock band that made people in their hometown of Louisville dance. With the band’s latest effort, Night on Fire, released on Astralwerks, the rest of the country may just feel the need to race for a prime spot on the dancefloor.
