COVER STORY EVERY TIME I DIE singer Keith Buckley and guitarist Andy Williams are being watched in much the same way one might stare at a firecracker with a lit fuse—everyone is afraid if they look away they’ll miss the explosion. With the recent release of Gutter Phenomenon on a not exactly unsuspecting world, Buckley and Williams talk about making your own scene, dealing with the consequences of being the life of the party, and not only skimming the surface of a very strange and potent milieu, but also diving exuberantly into what Buckley refers to as “the beautiful filth.”
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS ARCH ENEMY: As the most devastating outfit in today’s heavy music scene, Arch Enemy delivers neck-breaking brutality on the band’s latest album Doomsday Machine. Fresh from the band’s highly successful Ozzfest outing, guitarist Michael Amott and mic destroyer Angela Gossow were clearly amped in the midst of conquering the world.
BOYS NIGHT OUT: “Is my bus leaving without me? Hold on a sec. I’m sorry, but I’m running to catch up with them,” says Boys Night Out guitarist Jeff Davis. He apologizes for the commotion, gets himself situated safely on the bus, and is ready to discuss the band’s latest album and second effort for Ferret Music, Trainwreck.
AGAINST ME!: Expectations are high for Tom Gabel…again. His band, Against Me!, has evolved from a ramshackle one-man acoustic show to a full-fledged punk collaborative. With Searching for a Former Clarity road tested, Gabel and Against Me! have returned home to headline Fat Tour 2005.
GOD FORBID: Kicking off the first round of non-stop touring to promote their powerful new album IV: The Constitution of Treason, God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle is easygoing and unintentionally humorous. Tonight he’s hanging out with the members of Shadows Fall and his older brother—the other God Forbid guitarist, Dallas Coyle.
AIDEN: Despite the fact that he woke up only minutes before our interview, frontman WiL Francis’ voice conveys a sense of joy and hopefulness not often heard over cross-country phone lines. It is a voice that belies his past.
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME: On their new album Alaska, Between the Buried and Me is a band of mad musical alchemists. In person, Tommy Rogers is a pleasant chap, speaking thoughtfully with a slight Southern drawl.
MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD is a band that prides itself on its no nonsense / no frills approach to music, the business of music, and even (or especially) life. Making his way home, Justin Brannan talks about the ‘Blood, his sweat, and the tears of lesser bands.
FIGHT PARIS puts together music that makes truckers toss back brews and live audiences whip up the mosh pits. Complete with Southern hospitality, lead singer Kevin Phillips speaks about the band’s new record, Paradise, Found and his native region.
HORRORPOPS: “There’s a cheerleader movie called Bring It On!?” HorrorPops lead singer Patricia Day asks in disbelief, when questioned on any potential relationship between the title of her band’s new album and the 2000 teen comedy.
NEVERMORE: For a musician embarking on a tour to support an album with such a threatening title as This Godless Endeavor, Nevermore guitarist Jeff Loomis seems at ease, content even.
